Reading: Both grades will focus on finding what is important as they read. Grade 3's will begin a Fables unit (fiction) and also look for important information as they read about Urban and Rural Communities (non-fiction). Grade 2's will begin a Fairy Tales unit (fiction) and also look for important information as they read about Communities (non-fiction).
HOME READING: It continues to be important for all students to participate in the Home Reading program. Talking to your child about what he/she reads is a vital part of this program. Most children in grade 2 and 3 no longer struggle to decode (sound out) as they read. Therefore, the emphasis of our work is now on comprehension. Try to encourage your child to read a variety of both fiction and non-fiction.
Writing: Both grades will review and practise the many forms of writing we have covered this year, with special emphasis on editing. Students will review proper sentence structure. We have learned that a sentence MUST have: a subject, a verb, capital, punctuation and make sense. We have also begun to add interest to our writing by writing longer, more detailed sentences. We "Bling them up" with: adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and various sentence styles (questions, statements, exclamations).
